BELGRADE Slovenian FM Karl Erjavec has said that Slovenia will "certainly advocate that Serbia's talks with the EU should begin as soon as possible." This should take place "as early as in December, if possible," he noted. "Serbia's talks with EU should start in December" "Local elections in Kosovo constitute an important step leading to the normalization of relations between Serbia and Kosovo. That is why I sincerely wish and expect that the elections be successful and that the greatest possible number of Serbs cast their ballot," Erjavec said for the Wednesday issue of the Belgrade-based daily Danas. He adds that the first intergovernmental conference between the EU and Serbia will be called for January 2014 at the latest, but there is a possibility that the conference be held as soon as the European Council confirms the negotiating framework for Serbia - already in December. Asked whether the Pride Parade ban could jeopardize Belgrade's negotiations with Brussels, Erjavec said: "As far as I know, the Parade was held during the night and passed without any incident. That's encouraging. Of course, Serbia will have to dedicate much more attention to the respect of human rights and freedoms and the fight against intolerance during the future negotiations with the EU." "Generally speaking, I expect a positive report on Serbia's progress," said Erjavec, who is on a visit to Serbia as member of the Slovenian delegation led by Prime Minister Alenka Bratusek. Asked to what extent the beginning of talks depends on Germany, Erjavec said that decisions on further steps in the EU enlargement process are delivered by consensus of all member states. "EU requirements are clear - the implementation of the agreement with Pristina is important. If Serbia continues with adequate activities in that direction, there is no reason for fear of a possible delay in the official beginning of talks," Erjavec added. (Beta/AP, file) Danas Tanjug
