Head of Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) Vojislav Kostunica said Serbia's response to the EU's attempts to take Kosovo away from it should not be a referendum. This stand is contrary to the proposal of Serbian Progressive Party, which suggested the people should decide between the EU and Kosovo. Former PM: Serbia should not respond with referendum "A referendum would go against the Constitution, because no one is allowed to trade using Serbian territory as currency", Kostunica said addressing the DSS central committee in Lazarevac, central Serbia. "The problem imposed by the EU cannot be solved by an anti-constitutional referendum. It can only be solved through a clear policy focused on defending the country's territorial integrity," Kostunica noted. According to him, the current government has been keeping the country trapped for two and a half years now by saying that there is no alternative to joining the EU. The path that has no alternative "leads the country further into deterioration, weakening and ruin," Kostunica stressed. One of the alternatives to the present policy is to have Serbia cooperate with all countries, both eastern and western, to forward and protect its economic and national interests, Kostunica concluded.
