Serbia has no perspective if it does not become an EU member-state, opposition SNS party leader Tomislav Nikolic said. Nikolic was in Brussels this week for an unofficial meeting with EU Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele. Opposition leader on EU, Kosovo He said that Fuele assured him that "recognizing Kosovo would not be a condition for joining the EU". Nikolic added that he was under the impression that Thursday’s decision of the International Court of Justice (ICJ) on the legality of the Kosovo Albanian unilaterally proclaimed independence could set the stage for "some kind of new talks" between Belgrade and Pristina. However, the SNS leader said he was unable to predict "what that would look like". Nikolic told reporters in Belgrade that the Serbian government must organize a public meeting with the opposition on what to do after the ICJ’s opinion has been given. “Government officials need to organize a public meeting with official of all parliamentary parties and President Boris Tadic must say what he wants, because Serbia does not know what her president wants,” Nikolic was quoted as saying. “It seems to me that a majority of the UN General Assembly is on Serbia’s side,” he said, adding that the Serbian constitution needs to be respected, along with the situation on the ground and UN Resolution 1244, and that a new platform for negotiations must be based on these elements. “Serbia needs to ask for a continuation of talks on the status of Kosovo," the opposition leader stated, and was quoted as adding that the country "needs to see with what benefits it would be able to preserve everything it has preserved already, and to raise and build all it has not raised and built so far, in Kosovo and all of Serbia". As for the Brussels trip, Nikolic said it came in order to "sustain the continuity of the SNS contacts with EU enlargement commissioners". He also stated that the European Union "shares the Serbian opposition’s worries regarding the legislative reform in Serbia, the speed of reforms and the progress in the fight against corruption" Nikolic concluded by saying that his pro-EU orientation was "not brought into question in Brussels".
