President clarifies “indecent wealth” comment This Monday in Belgrade, he clarified that “indecently wealthy people” are those that have “no sense of social responsibility and use the money only for personal pleasures”. “How about if these people whose wealth I called indecent built a bridge that we would metaphorically call, ‘the Serbian Tycoons Bridge',” Tadic was quoted as saying. “That would be a way for them to buy their legitimacy, because people would feel like they have given something back,” Tadic said, adding that he "heard what the rules of the game were from people who accumulated their wealth during the 1990s”. At a conference on media, companies and social responsibility in Belgrade today, Tadic said that Serbia was in a transitional period where it should “understand what virtue is”, because there were “undefined interests in the process, and people who gained their wealth in a way that is not transparent or trustworthy, because the 1990s were like that”. But, the president also said that he did not wish to name any names, because, he explained, he was not the tycoons' “judge and jury”. He said that the prosecution and courts often have a hard time proving how the money was acquired, but that the process should be continued without an unnecessary persecution of all rich people. Turning to the media, Tadic called on reporters to “support an action such as building a tycoon bridge” and at the same time accused the media of being “prone to misinterpretations”. “When you try fighting against organized crime, then the media sphere interprets (this as) whether you're ready to fight against organized crime, or if you are looking for easy popularity. When I tried to solve something through comprise in politics, the media also met that kind of approach with comments that it was a sign of weakness and concessions,” Tadic complained.
