Deputy Prime Minister Bozidar Djelic stated that European Commission Deputy President Catherine Ashton will express support for Serbia’s European aspirations. “Serbia’s goal is to receive candidate status as soon as possible, but also, for Serbia to work on a future European strategy during the Spanish presidency regarding inclusion of Roma, as well as on solving the issue of refugees in the Western Balkans,” the deputy PM said at a press conference. Djelic expects support from EU When asked what he expected from the talks with Ashton, considering that she had said ahead of her visit to Bosnia-Herzegovina that the Western Balkans would be a priority of the EU’s foreign policy, Djelic said that it showed that statements “we often read are based on real knowledge of the importance of faster integration for the Western Balkans into the EU.” “The fact that Enlargement Commissioner Stefan Fuele held his first meeting since taking the position with a Serbian delegation, is also indicative, and I believe that it is a symbol that serves as a clear indicator of real priorities,” Djelic said. He pointed out that Ashton would be discussing the economic and social problems Serbia is facing in the time of the global financial crisis during her first visit. “She will see the efforts that our citizens are ready to make in order to maintain economic and financial stability, as well as the problems that exist in the region. She will see the great potential of Serbia and the Western Balkans,” he stressed. He stated that the visit would be brief but comprehensive and expressed hope that the EU foreign policy chief would get the right impression about Serbia’s needs and why it deserved the EU’s support. The deputy prime minister pointed out that Ashton is touring the region, and stressed that regional cooperation is one of the key topics that was discussed during the meetings with Fuele. “Serbia’s position is crystal clear. Serbia wants the future of the Western Balkans to be within the EU and it will not in any way accept any form Kosovo independence,” he concluded. Bozidar Djelic (FoNet archive)
