Hague Chief Prosecutor Serge Brammertz said that he expected that Ratko Mladic would be arrested after Radovan Karadzic’s July 2008 arrest. “We hoped that would have already happened, especially after the arrest of Karadzic. It would be best to join the cases against the two of them, because they were, according to the theory of the prosecution, working together on a united criminal act,” Brammertz told daily Deutsche Welle. Brammertz “expected Mladic arrest after Karadzic” He said that the UN Security Council is working on mechanisms for enabling trials against war criminals to be held even after the Hague Tribunal closes down. “This mechanism will be activated when an indictee is arrested. It is an important message of the international community coming from the need to be able to lead criminal proceedings before an international court whenever Mladic or Goran Hadzic is arrested,” he said. Speaking on Serbia’s cooperation with the Tribunal, Brammertz said that it was not always perfect, but that once the new government arrived two years ago, a greater readiness was seen for cooperation, and the police and security services began working more effectively. “But that does not mean that everything is ideal today, we need to cross a long road together still, because there is no alternative to arresting Mladic and Hadzic, and that is the message we are always giving our colleagues in Belgrade,” he said. Asked whether this means that Serbia will be able to join the EU without the arrest of the two fugitives, Brammertz said that his task is to make sure that cooperation with the Tribunal is progressing, not to decide what kind of political effect will be had by the analysis of the work of the Tribunal.
