Daily Blic writes that the withdrawing of an anti-discrimination draft from parliamentary procedures was directly influenced by Bishop of Backa Irinej Bulovic. The move was made in order to demonstrate that this Serbian Orthodox Church (SPC) dignitary has the enjoys the greatest trust of the top state brass, according to this report. "Bishop uses govt. as trump within Church" The newspaper's source close to the government said that Bishop Irinej asked President Boris Tadic to pull the law from procedures in order to show other bishops that he had the most influence on the state government and the best relationship with the president. The source claims that, in exchange, the bishop will become the person through whom the government can have influence on what happens within the Church. The newspaper claims that Tadic has been interested recently in closer ties with SPC heads "because he believes that the support of the church for pro-European policies is important". The Church, Blic continues, "has thus far refused to give any public statements on whether or not it supports the EU integration process".
