Ruecker announces departure from Kosovo

UNMIK chief Joachim Ruecker said in Pristina on Monday that he would no longer head this UN Mission in Kosovo. But the German diplomat added that UNMIK would continue its work for as long as UN Security Council Resolution 1244 remains in force. Ruecker announces departure from Kosovo "UNMIK will remain in Kosovo with limited authority," he said after a meeting with Kosovo officials, headed by President Fatmir Sejdiu and head of the International Civilian Office and EU representative in Kosovo Pieter Feith. "The UN will continue to play its role in Kosovo as long as Resolution 1244 remains in force, which is clear from the UN secretary-general's letter to Sejdiu, but will adjust to the changed circumstances," Ruecker said. It was announced that Ruecker and his first deputy Lawrence Rossin would leave Kosovo on June 20, with the most likely candidate to head "reformed UNMIK" being Italy's Lamberto Zanieri.
