Unilateral declaration of Kosovo's independence would pose major risks for the region, the Bulgarian PM says. In an interview with The Times of India ahead of his visit to that country on Tuesday, Sergei Stanishev, among other things, spoke of the issue of Kosovo describing it as “a very sensitive political matter with serious regional and international implications.” Bulgaria against unilateral moves, partition Claiming that the status quo is no longer sustainable after eight-year period of UNMIK administration, he noted that the lack of clarity regarding the future status “hampers the socio-economic development of Kosovo and puts at risk the peace and stability of the whole region.” “Any prolongation of Kosovo status settlement can be harmful not only to the Western Balkans region but to the EU as well.” Stanishev explained that Bulgaria stood for an internationally legitimate solution for Kosovo based on a UN resolution, noting that an internationally legitimate status settlement requires the active engagement of the EU, the U.S. and Russia. Speaking of UN Kosovo Envoy Martti Ahtisaari’s proposals, he said that they constitute for a balanced plan giving concrete guarantees for the stability and security in Kosovo and in the region as a whole. “We believe Ahtisaari's plan provides a good basis for an internationally legitimate decision for Kosovo to be endorsed by a UNSC Resolution.” “A unilateral declaration of independence poses the strongest risk for destabilization of the region,” he stressed adding that “such a move will deprive the international community of mechanisms for control and influence.” Stanishev also categorically rejected any ideas of ethnically clean Kosovo, partition of Kosovo, unification of the province with another state, or disrespect of the territorial integrity of neighboring countries. “Such approaches could trigger a chain effect in other parts of the region and must be avoided,” he underscored. The Bulgarian prime minister stressed the importance of accompanying the Kosovo status settlement by clear stimuli and control on the part of the international community in view of the challenges which the post-status period is about to bring. “International civilian and military presence with the key role of the EU and NATO will guarantee the security and stability of Kosovo and the whole region,” he said.
