Parliament Speaker Oliver Dulic said Saturday presidential elections will be called by the end of 2007. Dulic said the Constitutional Law would be fully respected and both local and presidential votes announced by the end of the year, regardless of whether or not the ruling parties agree over the terms and candidates. "Elections will be called by year’s end" “Differences within the ruling coalition cannot be put above the Constitutional Law. Only amendments to the law could bring about the postponement of the polls,” he argued. Commenting on statements of some Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS) officials that elections should be postponed until after the Kosovo status has been settled, Dulic noted that such demands were unacceptable. “We cannot allow for life in Serbia to stop while the status of the province is being settled,” he stressed. Meanwhile, Infrastructure Minister and New Serbia leader Velimir Ilic reiterated Saturday that this year should see no elections, as “the battle is being fought over Kosovo during these 120 days of renewed status talks.” “We don’t need a campaign at the point when Kosovo’s fate is being decided on. It would weaken our negotiating position,” said Ilic. The Constitutional Law says that local and presidential elections have to be called by December 31, and held within the next three months.
