Minister: Local elections by year’s end

Marković said he hoped the draft laws would be completed by mid-October at the latest.

“The Constitutional Law stipulates that 60 days have to pass following the adoption of these laws before we can announce and set the date for local elections,” he explained.

When it comes to amendments to the Law on Local Elections, Marković said that “certain concrete solutions” were yet to be found.

“We still have to decide whether the majority in a city assembly will appoint the mayor, or whether he or she will be elected in a direct vote,” he said.

Marković also added that the greatest challenge his ministry was facing was the adoption of the Law on Ethnic Minorities, which would regulate the election of councils of ethnic minorities, define their competences and modes of financing.
