Police was attacked Friday in Albania’s town of Gjirokastra by a crowd of 150 to 200 people from a nearby village.

Police was attacked Friday in Albania’s town of Gjirokastra by a crowd of 150 to 200 people from a nearby village. According to the Ministry of the Interior the mob threw stones at the station and burned two patrol cars. Police station attacked in southern Albania The attack came after the police special forces unit, RENEA, had killed a fugitive criminal, Sabri Shurdhi, who had been convicted in absentia on charges of kidnapping. During the operation, which involved an exchange of fire, an officer suffered minor injuries after bullets fired by Shurdhi failed to penetrate his flak-jacket. The officers inside the police station took up defensive positions on the roof, but did not intervene to quell the rioters who later left after the intervention of a community chief. The mob came from the village of Lazarat, just outside of Gjirokastra. The village is notorious for its lawlessness and has had serveral armed confrontations with police in the last decade. Lazarat is in a central location along the drug smuggling routes into Greece. Police destroy thousands of cannabis plants in the area every year. Tirana has often been forced to dispatch police special forces to keep control of the village.
