Czech soldiers end mission in Bosnia

Forty-six members of the Czech military's last contingent deployed in Bosnia as part of the Althea operation returned home on Sunday, Petr Sykora from the ministry's press department told CTK.

A total of 6,750 Czech soldiers have rotated through Bosnia-Herzegovina within NATO and EU missions since 1996.

The EU took over the task of supervising the peace in Bosnia from NATO in December 2004. It named the military operation, the EU's largest ever, Althea. The Czech Republic participated from the beginning.

The Czech contingent was part of the north military force under the Austrian command. It was responsible for the protection and guarding of the headquarters in Tuzla.

In 2005, two Czech Mi-17 helicopters operated in Bosnia, securing reconnaissance and the transport of people and equipment. They covered over 920 flight hours during the year and transported 4,663 people and more than 71 tons of materiel.

In Sarajevo, Slovak diplomat Miroslav Lajčak replaced German Christian Schwarz-Schilling as UN high representative for Bosnia today .

Lajčak is to be the last international "supervisor" with broad powers including the ability to declare laws and dismiss elected officials. The UN post was originally to be abolished as of June 30, but it was preserved for another year in view of Bosnian politicians' failure to agree on reforms required by the EU.

Last week he said in Bratislava his main tasks are to boost Bosnia's chances for European integration and to seek punishment of war criminals.t
