Wheat exports put on temporary hold

Agriculture Minister Slobodan Milosavljević said earlier yesterday that the government was forced to take the measure, necessary to relieve pressure on the prices of bread and meat, and secure stable supply of the basic agricultural products.

However, Dana Popović of the Center for Liberal-Democratic Studies says the decision to ban exports is “wrong, scandalous and economically unjustifiable”.

“The best thing to do now would be to discretely withdraw this decision,” Popović, a professor at Belgrade’s Faculty of Economy, told Beta Saturday.

She reminded that the last time such a decision was made was during the Milošević regime, when economists ridiculed it as anti-market and contrary to economic logic, and added it was unacceptable to reach for such solutions today.

Popović said the ban could not be justified with intention to prevent market upset and sudden price hikes due to decreased yields of crops.

“There is less wheat in the market and its price will certainly go up. The only thing that remains to be seen is when this will happen and who will profit from it,” Popović warned.
