RTB Bor privatization comes in focus
“Minister Mlađan Dinkić told me that he will organize a meeting regarding RTB Bor. There are several ministers involved, and it is known that the commission has confirmed an ecological strategy must be drafted, so we will probably be discussing that,” Đelić said.Last week, the decision to continue the privatization of the eastern Serbia-based mining and smelting company was postponed until a strategy for conserving the environment in Bor and Majdanpek was defined.
The Privatization Agency announced that, taking into consideration the environmental issues there, the council for implementing Bor’s restructuring and privatization believes that conserving and improving the environment was "one of the most important questions for the region, as well as the company itself."
On April 25, the Privatization Agency officially terminated the deal worth US$ 400mn concluded with Cuprom, which won the tender for RTB Bor announced on September 1, 2006, since the Romanian company failed to submit financial guarantees within the set deadline.
Earlier in June, Economy and Regional Development Minister Mlađan Dinkić said that the government would enter into negotiations with the consortium, comprised of Cypriot East Point Company and London-based ORN investment fund, which came second in the tender.
The minimum asking price at the 2006 tender was EUR 266.7mn, as Cuprom outbid East Pont by offering EUR 60mn more.
