The surgery to fit Serb Radicals (SRS) leader Vojislav Seselj with a heart pacemaker has been performed, the party has announced. “According to unofficial information we have, Seselj’s wife Jadranka was informed in the Hague Tribunal detention unit that the surgery is over,” SRS official Nemanja Sarovic has said. The SRS official stated that the Hague Tribunal Secretariat had said that it was still uncertain whether Seselj’s wife would be allowed to visit him during the day or not, even though she was promised on Wednesday that she could visit her husband. National Council for Cooperation with the Hague Tribunal President Rasim Ljajic announced on Thursday morning that the Hague indictee would undergo surgery to have a heart pacemaker implanted. “If Seselj agrees, a medical team will be sent from Serbia to The Hague during the day that will also examine him and assess his health condition,” he pointed out earlier on Thursday. Ljajic talked to the Hague Tribunal representatives on Wednesday and told them that it was unacceptable to transfer Seselj to a hospital outside prison without informing the Serbian authorities. He also said he wanted to visit the Serb Radical Party (SRS) leader but that he had refused. “The decision is not personal, it is not directed against me, it’s his principle position not to speak to the representatives of the Serbian government since he arrived in The Hague,” Ljajic explained. In the meantime, the Hague Tribunal has requested information about Seselj’s condition and ordered that he be examined by Russian specialist Sergei Nikolayevich Avdeyev once he is transferred back to his cell. The trial chamber also requested a report on circumstances under which the Hague indictee was transferred to the hospital last Friday. The judges also instructed Avdeyev to submit a report on Seselj’s condition as soon as possible.
