Decision on ex-Bosnian general extradition in July

Austrian authorities will decide whether they will extradite retired Bosnia-Herzegovina Army General Jovan Divjak to Serbia in mid-July. Divjak, who is wanted in Serbia and Bosnia-Herzegovina for crimes against Yugoslav People’s Army (JNA) troops in Dobrovoljacka Street in Sarajevo in 1992 was arrested in Austria in March on Serbian warrant. Divjak has not been questioned yet and the lawyer still has not made a statement. Documents are also being checked,” he explained. 42 JNA soldiers were killed, 73 were injured and more than 215 were captured in the attack carried out by Bosnia-Herzegovina Army, Territorial Defense and Muslim paramilitary units in Dobrovoljacka Street in Sarajevo on May 2-3, 1992. Ten officers, 28 soldiers and four civilians were killed. 32 of them were Serbs, six were Croats and four of them were Bosniak. According to Bosnian media, Divjak has requested to return to Bosnia-Herzegovina and therefore sent letters to the Austrian president, chancellor, foreign minister and justice minister. He was arrested on March 3 at Vienna Schwechat airport on Serbia’s warrant. Austrian Justice Ministry representative Christian Pilnacek told APA news agency that the case was being processed.

“The court’s decision in the case of extradition procedure should not be expected before mid-July. Divjak has not been questioned yet and the lawyer still has not made a statement. Documents are also being checked,” he explained.
