Turkish surgeon Yusuf Sonmez has denied his involvement in human organ trafficking in Kosovo and Albania. In an interview for the Belgrade-based daily Vecernje Novosti he stated he did not intend to appear before the EU mission in Kosovo, EULEX, court which indicted for being the "chief surgeon" in the private clinic Medicus in Pristina. "Doctor Vampire" has no faith in "crime-infested Kosovo" "I have no intention of appearing before the EULEX court. I do not believe in Kosovo's institutions, nor in the possibility that such a crime-infested territory can ensure a fair trial, not even under the auspices of Europe and the UN," Sonmez said, when asked "why he avoids facing justice if he claims that he is innocent". Sonmez and nine other persons were investigated on suspicion that they developed a human organ trafficking ring in Kosovo. The Turkish surgeon, nicknamed "Doctor Vampire" in some reports, is believed to have headed the group which lured poor eastern Europeans to Pristina on the false promise that they would receive money for their kidneys. The organs were sold to rich patients from western countries. The Turkish doctor admits that he worked at the Medicus clinic for a certain period, denying his involvement in illegal activities or the so-called Yellow House case, which concerns the faith of the kidnapped and murdered Kosovo Serbs, whose organs were harvested and illegally sold at the end of the 1990s. Yusuf Sonmez, whom the Turkish media also refer to as "Doctor Frankenstein", lives with his wife and daughter in a luxurious villa in an elite part of Istanbul. Even though he was temporarily held in custody, he will not be extradited to EULEX, as the Turkish laws do not allow for that. But the surgeon said he would "tell a domestic court what he knows, if need be". Sonmez, was previously suspected of taking part in an organ trafficking operation in his own country, stated for Vecernje Novosti that there was never any proof of his guilt, and blamed the local media for "setting him up".
