Slain journalist Slavko Curuvija’s brother Jovo called on journalists to pressure the government into solving the case of his brother's murder. He said that since the democratic changes in October 2000, the government has been promising to solve the murder case, but ha yet to do anything. Serbian Journalists’ Association President Ljiljana Smajlovic said that the opposition at the time, before it took power, promised that the case would be solved quickly. “The problem is one for journalist associations as well. We have to think of new ways every year to put pressure on the government,” Smajlovic said, adding that The government “must realize that we will not give up and that we will continue to ask them every year.” Independent Journalists’ Association of Serbia President Nadezda Gace said that the government is incapable of telling the public the names of the people responsible for the murder. “I would not say that the state does not want to solve the cases, it’s more that the state cannot answer the question directly, and have justice be served in court,” she said. Slavko Curuvija, the owner of Dnevni Telegraf and Evropljanin magazine, was killed on April 11, 1999 in front of his apartment building in the center of Belgrade. He was killed during the NATO bombing of the former Yugoslavia. A decade after the fact, the state has yet to make any progress regarding a suspect in the murder investigation.
