Turkish doctor Jusuf Erchin Sonmez, suspected of performing an illegal kidney transplant at the MEDICUS private clinic in Pristina, is on the run. The police have so far arrested three suspects—two urologists and the clinic manager—in the case of the illegal transplant at the clinic. The police have so far learned that the two doctors, Lufti Dervishi and Tun Perforaj, recently performed an illegal kidney transplant at the clinic. The intended recipient was an Israeli national. Police arrested the donor as he was making his way to Pristina airport to catch a flight back to Istanbul. “We’re searching for one more doctor who’s a Turkish national, who we believe led the operation. Meanwhile, we’re now going to review the clinic’s entire history. There will most probably be more arrests,“ said Kosovo Police Service (KPS) spokesman Veton Elshani. Kosovo media have focused a great deal of attention on the case. The press reports that the clinic is claiming in its defense that it has a Health Ministry license to perform organ transplants. The ministry denies these claims, stating that MEDICUS was only issued guidelines on what conditions it needed to meet to receive a license for carrying out such operations. The clinic, situated on the outskirts of the Kosovo capital, is still under investigation, and its work has been completely suspended. The kidney recipient is still at the clinic receiving intensive care. Police say that as well as receiving medical treatment, he is also under intensive police supervision.
