Serbia will soon offer legal assistance to Radovan Karadzic, says Serbia’s ambassador to Holland. Radoslav Stojanovic told Reuters that he would address the Tribunal and ask the court to allow him to visit Karadzic. “Serbia to help Karadzic defense” He said that he would ask the government to send documents that were needed in the case if “Karadzic thinks that the Serbian government can help with his defense.” “I will ask him whether he needs the help of the Serbian government in preparing documents, and maybe some financial support,” Stojanovic told the news agency. “If he wants to see me, I will meet with him,” the ambassador said. He said that the Serbian government was obliged to contact Karadzic and offer him help, not because they had sympathy for the war crimes suspect, but because the former Bosnian Serb leader had been arrested on Serbian territory, and in order to ensure a just trial. Stojanovic, who used to be Belgrade’s representative at the Tribunal before becoming an ambassador, said that a Serbian embassy adviser in Holland had met with Karadzic earlier, and that he had offered him a small amount of financial help—EUR 200 per month—but that there had not been a specific agreement with Karadzic regarding the offer. “He said, ‘I am knackered right now, I am not capable of thinking about such small things now, we will see,’” he said. However, the ambassador does not believe that Karadzic will want to meet with him because Stojanovic spoke critically of the former Bosnian Serb leader on earlier occasions.
