Serbia's legal representative in the lawsuit brought by Croatia for alleged genocide says the court considering it could declare itself without jurisdiction. "We hope that the [International] Court [of Justice] will declare itself without jurisdiction, since the arguments we presented are based on previous court decisions concerning former Yugoslavia," Vladimir Djeric told daily Danas. Serbia optimistic over Croat genocide suit He added that the same court opted for a similar move when it said its jurisdiction in the Serbian case against NATO counties, brought for the 1999 attack, did not exist, since then Federal Republic of Yugoslavia (SRJ) was not a UN member until November 2000. "The same principle must be applied when it comes to the Croatian lawsuit, because it was lodged at a time before SRJ joined the UN," Djeric argued. In case the court declares itself with jurisdiction in the matter, a written procedure would continue, where Serbia would have the right to respond to the lawsuit. But, if it so decides, Serbia could file a countersuit of its own.
