The Jagodina Public Prosecution has brought charges against customs officials and members of a so-called Auto Mafia. Charges have been brought against 31 individuals including officials from Batrovci, Kragujevac and Jagodina, as well as against suspects accused of the illegal import and re-sale of cars, prosecution spokeswoman Mirjana Stanojlovic told Tanjug. Charges brought against Auto Mafia The 31 suspects in question are from Jagodina, Cuprija, Paracin, Kragujevac, Bor, Belgrade, Novi Sad, Sid, Backa Palanka, Gajdobra and elsewhere. Auto Mafia members were arrested during an operation led by MUP's Anti-Organized Crime Department (UBPOK) on June 13, while two days later customs officials were apprehended and spent three months in custody. District Public Prosecutors Aleksandar Petrovic and Slavko Knezevic will lead the case, and the suspects have been charged on counts of criminal association, receiving and giving bribes, abuse of office, forging identification papers and other documentation, all of which has cost the tax payer several million euros. Ten of the accused customs officials work in Batrovci and five in Jagodina and Kragujevac. The remainder are owners of haulage and engraving companies, who are suspected of the re-sale of 200 top-of -the-range cars throughout Serbia. The suspects' scam, it is believed, worked as follows: at border crossings blank bond notes would be issued, while at customs offices car serial numbers would not be checked. The vehicles’ age would then be readjusted, mileage would be reduced, before being sold on at an inflated price. The bond notes would be falsified using false names and ID card numbers, while on several accusations the personal details of a 70-year old Jagodina resident would be used. The police found vital evidence at a haulage company “that had kept very accurate records” as well as within documentation for vehicles that did not meet the conditions for legal import.
