3,700 km of roads in Serbia damaged in floods
The total damage caused will only become known in several months' time, once landslides are stabilized, Poledica told the RTS, adding that traffic is slowed down on many road sections as a result.Rehabilitation work has already begun and Putevi Srbije teams and road maintenance companies are already on the ground across the country, he said.
Poledica denied media speculation that damage to the Corridor 10 section from Niš to Dimitrovgrad totals around EUR 100 million, adding that the actual amount of the damage - caused on a new section between Nis and the Bulgarian border - is much smaller.
The Drina arterial road is the priority now, with two road disruptions being the most critical - at Mali Zvornik and Rogačica - where the Drina River destroyed hundreds of metres of the carriageway, causing major landslides and damage, he said.
The amount of damage on the two spots is estimated at millions of euros, Poledica said, adding that about a dozen bridges have been destroyed in the Krupanj area.
The priority is to ensure that those locations are interconnected by roads again and that people and goods can travel without trouble, Poledica said.
