“Greek banks are safe”

Hypo Alpe Adria Bank Board of Directors President Vladimir Cupic said that the savings of Serbian citizens are safe in Greek banks. He said that Greek banks in Serbia are working according to Serbian laws and that the situation in Greece does not mean that local banks will be put in danger. “Greek banks are safe” “I am not worried in this sense, and I really think that no one should be worried about what will happen to Greek banks in Serbia. I think that the savings are guaranteed, and we are especially sure of the fact that the National Bank of Serbia, the main regulator on the market, has mechanisms with which it will react in certain moments,” Cupic said. He reminded that the debt of Greece, which has grown to EUR 300bn, is mostly a fiscal debt, not a debt of banks, and that these two things need to be separated. There are five Greek banks doing business in Serbia currently—EGF Eurobank, The National Bank of Greece, Alfa Bank, Pireus Bank, and Marfin Bank.
