This season, domestic tourism agencies saw increases of ten percent in the number of bookings, mostly because of the decreased price of hotels abroad currently. Most Serbs traveled to Greece, Montenegro, Turkey and Bulgaria. “I think that the relation of powers is still one to one, there are the same number of cheap and expensive arrangements being sold, some even cost more than EUR 700-800,” Ivana Djuric of the Big Blue Travel agency said. Serbia is still interesting to tourists, and statistics from the first half of the year show that 380,000 tourists visited the country. Serbians hotels did not decrease prices like abroad, and some USD 340mn of income has arrived from tourism, the Economy Ministry stated. “The number of tourists in Serbia increased by seven percent and the number of nights spent in Serbia is greater this year than last,” Deputy Economy Minister Renata Pindzo said. In the first half of the year, more than 270,000 tourists visited Belgrade, mostly from regional countries, but also from Italy, France and Germany, among other countries. However, the Tourism Organization of Belgrade stated that the numbers will suffer in the second half of the year because of the recent attacks and assaults on foreign citizens in the capital. “People come to Belgrade, according to our surveys, for the atmosphere and security, I am sure that with everything that happened over the week, the government will be reacting adequately as any serious European country should do on the road to transition, and I hope that these are individual cases which will not repeat themselves, and the statistics will show for August and September, until the end of the year, what the effects were,” Jasmina Dimitrijevic of the Tourism Organization of Belgrade said. The natural phenomenon of Djovolja Varos has over 50,000 visitors per year, and tourism officials expect that more attention will be put on such rural and ethno tourism in the coming years.
