Poor market conditions, brought about by the international economic crisis, have called into question the end of the Serbian privatization process. In that context, Economy Minister Mladjan Dinkic announced yesterday that the state was abandoning the privatization of the RTB Bor copper mine and was planning to become the owner by buying up the company’s debts. Crisis to derail privatizion process? President Boris Tadic also stated yesterday that he opposed the privatizations of the state telephone and power companies, Telekom and EPS. The news that the state planned to assume responsibility for running the company that has thus far suffered three failed privatization attempts, has delighted employees, says Dragan Aleksic, president of the Samostalni Union. “I hope that everything the minister’s promised will come to fruition. That’s what the Samostalni Union’s been seeking since 2000,“ he pointed out. Independent Union leader Rudolf Navijalic expects the government’s decision to mean jobs for all RTB’s employees. “After several years of clamoring for something substantive to be done, we’ve finally got the decision—not a promise, but a decision, for operative steps to be taken to attract offers for the construction of a new state-of-the-art blast furnace, which is fantastic,“ said Navijalic.
