Tourists and Belgraders interested in visiting the Great War Island will have 28 chances to do so free of charge. Namely, the Tourist Association of the Belgrade municipality of Zemun has decided to organize free tours once a week for the next 14 weeks. Free tours of Belgrade's Great War Island The island is located near the confluence of the Danube and Sava rivers. All those interested will have to register with the association, and then set off to see the island every Thursday, in two daily departures, the first scheduled for 09:00 CET. City officials have said that Belgrade will finance the project, aimed at developing the island's eco, green and nautical tourism, with RSD 500,000. In April 2005, the Belgrade Assembly voted to declare the Great War Island a natural reserve, and place it under official protection as an area of exceptional characteristic. The 167 hectares of the island are a unique oasis for many animal, especially bird species, and are divided into three zones: special nature reserve, and recreational and tourist areas. The latter zone includes one of Belgrade's river beaches, the Lido.
