Croatian PM Jadranka Kosor has accepted Deputy Premier and Minister of Agriculture Damir Polancec’s resignation. Polancec resigned in Zagreb on Friday amid accusations from media and political parties, regarding his involvement in an affair shaking Koprivnica-based Podravka food company for weeks. Croatian deputy prime minister resigns The media claim that investigation considers him to be the mastermind behind a bid to take over the company. Namely, a group of managers, some of which are now in prison, tried to buy Podravka's shares for themselves using the company money. But Polancec stated the controversial loan had been approved "after the direct intervention from Croatian President Stjepan Mesic". He also told reporters that his resignation came in order not to damage the government, the ruling coalition, or himself, but that he was "ready to respond to the accusations". The now former deputy prime minister denied speculation that he would return to the Croatian parliament in order to obtain MP immunity – something that some previous Croatian cabinet ministers had resorted to after resigning. The Croatian media claim that the ongoing investigation shows that he initiated, planned and organized the Podravka takeover operation. In the past three years, while he was in office, Polancec acquired company shares worth EUR 1,45mn, reports claim.
