BELGRADE A date for the start of the EU accession negotiations is extremely important because there is no better pathway than the European one, says Dragan Djilas. The Democratic Party (DS) leader and Belgrade Mayor announced that his party would adopt a plan for national recovery on March 17. DS leader: Early elections will be held this year He added that he believed that early parliamentary elections would be held in the fall. Djilas says that progress in the EU integration is a consequence of the government’s readiness to accept things regarding Kosovo that former President Boris Tadic and government did not accept. “We would have had progress if Tadic accepted customs or abolition of Serbia’s insitutions in the north,“ he explained and called on the government to tell citizens the truth and be honest about negotiations with Pristina. The DS leader believes that despite the fact that citizens are tired of the “carrot and stick” there is no better pathway than the European one. He stressed that the DS would be a constructive opposition and that it would support pro-EU bills. Djilas is certain that early elections will be held this year because “it is clear to everyone that the government does not function”. According to him, aside from combat against crime and corruption, the current government had not achieved any significant results bearing in mind that “economic indicators are worse than during the government in which the DS was the backbone”. When asked if it was possible to form a large coalition with the Serbian Progressive Party (SNS), he said that it was definitely not possible. “It is unacceptable to sit in the same government with those who act like parties that are today in power or people who have people in their ministries who make lists of inappropriate NGOs and media,” Djilas noted. He stressed that the most important issues in the country were everyday issues and that he wanted the DS to lead a policy that would solve citizens’ existential issues. The DS leader pointed out that his party was not trying to topple the government by creating affairs and that it concentrated on its program, ideas and attempt to win back citizens’ trust. “The DS will not use populism to increase the ratings and number of voters and it will instead always tell the truth,” Djilas said and added that the “truth will prevail in the end”.
