EU "has no favorite” in Serbian elections

European Parliament Rapporteur for Serbia Jelko Kacin has stated that the EU must not have its favorites in the upcoming elections in Serbia. He stressed that the EU would wait for the results of the elections. EU "has no favorite” in Serbian elections “Every political group that shows that it has a clear European orientation and that it will implement concrete reforms can get Brussels’ full support,” Kacin told Novi Sad-based daily Dnevnik. He added that just like Serbia could not choose EU officials the EU could not choose Serbian ones. “It is very important that we have reached a moment in Serbia’s European integration when it is no longer important who will win the election,” the EP rapporteur pointed out and added that the Stabilization and Association Agreement (SAA) had started when Tomislav Nikolic had left the Serb Radical Party (SRS) and advocated the ratification in parliament. “Once Serbia becomes an EU member state all of its citizens will become European citizens, not only members of the ruling coalition of pro-European movements,” Kacin was quoted as saying. He believes that “Russia does not exist as a political, let alone economical or democratic alternative” for Serbia after gaining the EU candidate status.
