EULEX’s withdrawal from Kosovo would not be good for the local Serbs, says Serbian government’s Media Office chief Milivoje Mihajlovic. “I wish there were more members of international missions in Kosovo and Metohija, because the more of them the better protection of the Serbian population, regardless of the fact that we have had objections to the work of the international missions ever since 1999," he pointed out. Media Office chief: Intl. missions need to stay in Kosovo "If these missions withdrew, Serbs would be left to the mercy of Kosovo Liberation Army (KLA) commanders, some of them are now ministers in Hashim Thaci’s government,” Mihajlovic added. He repeated that EULEX was a part of the UN mission and that it had the UN mandate, adding that “Kosovo is an UN protectorate to Belgrade, and all missions operating there, both military and civilian ones, should have a UN mandate.” “They are not status neutral in certain situations, but it’s up to us to pressure them into being status neutral and I hope we will succeed in it,” the Media Office chief pointed out. On the other hand, Center for New Policy Program Director Nikola Jovanovic believes that EULEX is the “main mission” in Kosovo while UNMIK is only an umbrella under which EULEX operates. “In order to return situation to the one we had in 2008 when EULEX was brought, Security Council would have to approve the new ‘reconfiguration’ of UNMIK which would cause EULEX to lose its mandate,” Jovanovic pointed out. “Of course, that’s unrealistic and impossible. With all objections we have to EULEX, even KFOR’s work we should stick to realistic ideas and we should look for a solution within reality. We have the right to present our objections to the (UN) secretary general or the Security Council, but unfortunately we cannot do anything without the UN bodies,” he explained. (Beta, file)
