Serbs start rebuilding homes in Brđani

The restoration of five Serb homes in the northern Kosovska Mitrovica neighborhood of Brdjani has begun today. In light of the announcement, EULEX officials in Kosovska Mitrovica stated earlier in the day that they have taken all necessary measures to make sure that they have control of the northern part of the city. Serbs start rebuilding homes in Brdjani “After two weeks of protests in which EULEX officials used tear gas and stun grenades in order to prevent the Serbs and Albanians from getting close to each other, Serbs in Brdjani will start renovating five of their homes today. The condition is only that the Serbs end the two-week long protests against the restoration of Albanian homes,” EULEX stated. Serb official in Brdjani Nebojsa Minic told B92 that technical preparations need to be done first, while construction is expected to start in the next two weeks. The construction of five Serbian houses, he said, was agreed on with the international missions in Kosovo as well. Serbs will, regardless of security risks, begin restoring the homes, Minic said. EULEX officials in Kosovska Mitrovica stated that they have taken all measures to ensure safety in the city’s northern parts. EULEX stated that no one will be allowed to be present at the site, other than those working on the reconstructions. For the past two weeks the Serbs in this ethnically divided Kosovo town protested against the repair works on houses owned by ethnic Albanians situation in the Serb part, without prior agreement.
