Russia's far east regions report minus 50 degrees

MOSCOW -- Extremely low temperatures have been measured in the far east regions of Russia, resulting in the deaths of several people.

The temperatures there range from minus 40 to minus 50 degrees centigrade.

Several elderly people froze to death in the town of Khabarovsk.

Schools were closed on Thursday morning in Borogontsi, Yakutia, when the temperature dropped to minus 53.

The extreme cold snap is forecast to last in the region for at least the next five days.
