Strong police forces have been deployed today near the Hyatt Hotel in Belgrade where a conference of NATO and its partner countries is being held. The security has been raised to the highest level in Belgrade. Intelligence ahead of the summit said that there would be no major unrest or protest, he said, adding that this was confirmed by the fact that only the opposition DSS party held a protest drive in Belgrade today. Popovac then proceeded to list all the actions undertaken by police: "Maximum level engagement of forces from regular ranks and implementation of measures and actions by the ministry in its operative and preventive measures, measures of physical security, counter-sabotage, preventive-technical, fire protection, and biological and technical measures". Meanwhile, policemen were securing the hotel, with rare passers-by glancing at them curiously. Most protest gatherings in the past few days ended peacefully, with the exception of that organized by the left-wing Anti-NATO Campaign, eight of whose activists were arrested. Popovac clarified that six from the group had been released pending their appearance before a judge, while one activist was already sent to jail for 15 days. (Tanjug)
