World number three and Serbia's top male tennis player Novak Djokovic held a news conference in Belgrade on Wednesday. Djokovic confirmed that the first ATP tournament in Serbia would be organized next year, "definitely putting the country on the tennis map of the world". Djokovics bring ATP tour to Belgrade "After all our tennis players' excellent results lately, we have managed to put Serbia on the tennis map of the world. Serbia deserves that. Belgrade at this time, at least this is my impression, lives for tennis," Djokovic told reporters gathered in the Stari Dvor (Old Palace) building. His family's enterprise, Family Sport, will organized the event in May 2009, offering USD 500,000 in prize money to participants. The tournament's directors are Novak's uncle, Goran Djokovic, and Nikola Pilic. "I already spoke in passing to some tennis players about their coming to Belgrade, but I could not do this more seriously until we were certain we would get the tournament, which happened only at the end of the season. Now we will certainly do that," Djokovic said. Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas also attended the news conference to thank the Djokovic family, and describe the fact that Serbia's capital is set to host an ATP tournament as, "a great thing". Environment and Spatial Planning Minister Oliver Dulic, who Beta news agency says helped the organization of this future tennis event but cutting some of the red tape, said that Djokovic's name is a world brand that is making a significant contribution to Serbia's positive image abroad. The Stari Dvor press conference today was also attended by Interior Minister Ivica Dacic, City of Belgrade Sports Secretary Igor Miklja, Serbian Sports Alliance General Secretary Dane Korica, and recently retired Savo Milosevic, who holds a record number of caps in the Serbian national football squad. The tournament will have Telekom Srbija as its chief sponsor, with other state enterprises, such as PTT Srbija, NIS and Srbijagas, also on the sponsor list.
