Macedonia's government has reached a deal with opposition parties late Friday, the AP says. The deal "will allow it to remain in power until a NATO summit next month", reports suggested. Macedonia: Cabinet collapse postponed Macedonia hopes to be invited to join NATO at the April 2-4 summit. But the bid was thrown into turmoil Thursday when an ethnic Albanian party quit Prime Minister Nikola Gruevski's coalition, leaving it without a majority in Parliament. "The current Cabinet will function until the NATO summit as a minority government," Foreign Minister Antonio Milososki said. He gave no further details. The Democratic Party of Albanians (DPA) withdrew from the coalition with Gruevski’s VMRO-DPMNE majority. According to the BBC, DPA leader Menduh Thaci has presented Gruevski with a series of conditions for staying in the coalition – amongst others that Skopje recognizes Kosovo’s unilateral independence, that it adopts laws on the use of the Albanian language and flag, and that it guarantees social welfare for Albanians who took part in the insurrections in Macedonia in 2001. Gruevski has not reacted to those demands, which Thaci, as he himself put it, has interpreted as a refusal. “This is a severe political crisis for Macedonia. We’re telling all those who think that they will get out of this situation using political marketing and cheap tactics that they won’t succeed. We are not concerned about elections, nor about governments, for us the only important thing is to carry this process through to the end,” said Thaci. Matters are coming to a head just before the NATO summit in Bucharest, where Macedonia could be sent an invitation to join the Western military alliance. According to the BBC, that will happen provided that the country resolves the dispute over its name with Greece.
