Serbia plans to boost joint patrols with Hungarian police

Speaking at a press conference, Stefanovic said that discussions are held with Hungarian police on a daily basis and that he spoke with Austrian Interior Minister Johanna Mikl-Leitner on Monday about various migration-related challenges.

Last week, Hungarian PM Viktor Orban said that "refugees" should be "stopped in the Serbian territory," and threatened to close the border between the two countries.

Even though it is not an EU member, Serbia is trying to be an important factor in solving this issue, said Stefanovic, expressing hope that a sustainable solution will be found with European partners in the coming days.

The minister announced the deployment of reinforced joint patrols with Hungarian police, and that patrols will also be boosted at the Macedonian border.

Most asylum seekers and migrants cross into Serbia from the EU - Bulgaria and Greece - and, for them, Serbia is mostly a transit country, the minister said.

Serbia is striving to respect all readmission agreements signed with other countries, but also to protect the interests of the Serbian citizens and people coming to the country, Stefanovic said.
