ZOCISTE Government Office for Kosovo and Metohija Director Aleksandar Vulin has called for "Serb unity" in the southern province. He also announced that the Serbian government would voice a clear stand concerning the local elections in Kosovo which have been scheduled for November 3. Office director calls for "Serb unity" in Kosovo "The essence of the Serbian government's policy rests on the recovery of life in Kosovo-Metohija and in order to achieve this, Serbs in the province need to demonstrate absolute unity, in political, economic and spiritual terms," Vulin told reporters in Zociste near Orahovac, an enclave south of the Ibar River. "Failure to accept the authority of the government and state of Serbia would entail that all efforts were invested in vain," Vulin said and called on Serbs to the north and the south of the Ibar River to show political unity. “If we show disunity again and take different sides, if we divide ourselves into northern and southern Serbs, into Belgrade and Pristina Serbs, or into any other categories, we will not be able to survive,” Vulin said. He attended the liturgy to mark the patron day of a monastery in Zociste. On this occasion, he recalled that Zociste was "the site of major Serb suffering but has now also become a site of major recovery." In the Orahovac area, Serbs experienced a pogrom by Albanian extremists and separatists even before the armed conflicts in July 1998 when over 100 people were detained and 47 more were murdered or kidnapped and then assassinated - the remains of almost a half of them have not been found to this day, Tanjug reported. Prior to the armed conflicts with the paramilitary formation of Kosovo Albanians entitled the Kosovo Liberation Army and the NATO bombing in 1999, Orahovac was a home to 3,000 Serbs and now only 400 live there, the news agency said.
