Parliament elects deputy speakers

Six deputy speakers have been appointed today, with, under an all-party agreement, four coming from the opposition, and two from the ruling majority.

Six deputy speakers have been appointed today, with, under an all-party agreement, four coming from the opposition, and two from the ruling majority. Natasa Jovanovic and Bozidar Delic have been chosen from the Serb Radical Party (SRS), and Radojko Obradovic from the Democratic Party of Serbia (DSS). Parliament elects deputy speakers The Liberal Democratic Party nominated Judita Popovic, G17 Plus Nikola Novakovic, while Gordana Comic is the choice of the coalition gathered around the Democratic Party (DS). Speaker Slavica Djukic Dejanovic proposed Socialist Party of Serbia (SPS) member Veljko Odalovic as the new parliamentary secretary. Earlier, the speaker held consultations with representatives from MP clubs, after which new Speaker Slavica Djukic Dejanovic told journalists that the plan was for the session to end today, or “tomorrow at the latest”. She said that there had been no talk at the meeting of the next session of parliament. She was elected speaker on Wednesday evening at around 22:00 CET. MPs voted publicly, and her election was supported by 128 MPs from the ranks of the Socialist Party coalition, the Democratic Party coalition, and the minority parties. 97 MPs from the Serb Radical Party, the Democratic Party of Serbia-New Serbia, and the Liberal Democratic Party voted against. Speaking of Djukic-Dejanovic, her political opponents and party colleagues alike all agree that she is an expert at her job. Her fellow Kragujevac residents say that she is an excellent doctor, but, as a politician, certain people criticize her for being inside Slobodan Milosevic’ villa at the time of his arrest. Djukic-Dejanovic, a neuro-psychiatrist by profession, was born in 1951 near Kragujevac, where she also went to school. She studied medicine at Belgrade University, from where she graduated with an average mark of 9.38. She completed a PhD in neuro-psychiatry in 1986, before going on to work at the Medical Faculty, starting as an assistant, later becoming a regular professor. Between 1995 and 2001, she was the director of the KBC in Kragujevac, but was fired after protests by some 20,000 Kragujevac residents. Djukic-Dejanovic is currently the deacon of Kragujevac Medical Faculty, vice-president of the Association of Psychiatrists of Serbia, and she has had 163 articles and works published at home and abroad.
