Milošević stirs spirits in Novi Sad

The SPS’s Novi Sad City council deputy Svetislav Krstić said a boulevard should be named after Slobodan Milošević since he represents “a dominant political figure in the 20th century Serbian political history”. The Democrats reacted by announcing a protest.

The DS Novi Sad branch is set to organize a protest walk in the wake of the SPS proposal, and also because of the possibility that the City street-naming committee might consider changing the name of Zoran Đinđić Street, located near the University. The Democrats’ Novi Sad branch chairman Igor Pavličić said the protest will start tomorrow at 4 p.m. at the Sloboda (Freedom) Square, and end in the street named after the late prime minister.

The DS youth wearing t-shirts with the assassinated Serbian prime minister’s image have been handing out flyers inviting Novi Sad residents to join the protest. The flyers also contained Zoran Điniđić’s quotes. LSV, G17 Plus and SPO, members of the United Novi Sad opposition, all intend to join the protest walk.

Meantime, the City street-naming committee vice chairwoman Biljana Malović, a City council deputy elected on SPS ticket, announced that the initiative will be considered at the committee’s next session. Malović said earlier that Milošević deserved to get a street or a monument, because he, unlike those in the business of demolishing and destruction, had opened a bridge in Novi Sad, initiated the construction of three other bridges, as well as of apartments for young couples, citing “all the other achievements on the country’s reconstruction that took place during his rule”.  

Some of the ruling DSS and SRS party members announced they would not support either initiative.

LSV: Mention the victimsThe

The League of the Social Democrats of Vojvodina will support the initiative to name a Novi Sad boulevard after Slobodan Milošević, but only if his victims are mentioned as well.

The LSV says Milošević’s name can appear as the name of a boulevard, but only in the following construction: Slobodan Milošević’s Victims Boulevard. The party will submit this proposal to the City street-naming committee, scheduled to meet next week.
