Striking workers block intl. railroad
Workers of privatized construction company GIK Prvi Maj from Lapovo have blocked the international railroad line between Belgrade and Niš.

Workers of privatized construction company GIK Prvi Maj from Lapovo have blocked the international railroad line between Belgrade and Nis. They are dissatisfied over failure of authorities see to their end of a deal reached earlier this year, according to reports. Striking workers block intl. railroad President of the company’s union Novica Markovic said that 130 out of 254 workers started the protest this morning and that they had “decided themselves to block the railroad”. According to him, there are police at the train station, but the protest is peaceful and without any incidents. “The workers are demanding payment of overdue wages, validation of their health insurance cards, launching of production and a social program,” Markovic said. He added that the competent ministries had agreed to meet their demands last summer and that this deal ended a strike that lasted for almost four months. "The firm was promised a EUR 1mn loan from the Development Fund which is necessary in order to meet the workers' requests, but this support was canceled last week,“ the union president added. The company owes workers 8.5 salaries on average, and their pension insurance had only been paid through April this year. This is the fourth time that the Prvi Maj workers have been blocking the railroad.
