Three former members of the disbanded Special Operations Unit (JSO) denied giving false alibis for former JSO commander Milorad Ulemek. While presenting their defense in front of the Fifth Municipal Court in Belgrade, Dejan Ivkovic, Nenad Cebic and Vukasin Vukasinovic claimed that they spoke the truth as witnesses in the case probing the 2000 murder of former Serbian president Ivan Stambolic and the attempted murder of Serbian Renewal Movement (SPO) leader Vuk Draskovic, also in 2000, in Budva, Montenegro. Ex-JSO officers deny perjury Ivkovic and Vukasinovic said that they were in Budva at that time to arrest someone in Montenegro (JUL party member Nenad Djordjevic), but that the task was not completed because of “some events”. They said that they do not know if the four JSO members who were convicted for the murder and attempted murder, Nenad Ilic, Nenad Bujosevic, Leonid Milivojevic and Branko Bercek, were in Budva at the time, because they were on different assignments. “It was not my intention to mislead the court, I was speaking of the action in which I participated. Our only sin was that we were a part of that unit,” Vukasinovic said in court, reading a prepared statement and refusing to answer any questions. Cebic decided to stick with his decision to remain silent during the proceedings. Neither the Special nor the Supreme Court accepted their previous testimony and Ulemek was convicted to 40 years in prison as the organizer of a criminal enterprise which committed the crimes. Ivkovic, Cebic also Vukasinovic testified in the trial for the murder of prime minister Zoran Djindjic. False testimony would earn them up to five years in prison, if found guilty. The perjury indictment against the two JSO members was prepared by the Special Prosecution, but it was handed over to the Fifth Municipal Prosecution after it was confirmed that there were no elements of organized crime. Stambolic was kidnapped on August 25, 2000 and later killed on Mt. Fruska Gora. The attempted murder of Draskovic took place on June 15, 2000 in Montenegro.
