VLASOTINCE Police officer Miroslav Stamenkovic, 27, and two robbers have been killed in a shootout during a jewelry store robbery in the southeastern town of Vlasotince. A third robber was arrested. Montenegrin gang kills policeman in Serbian town The robbery took place around 8:45 CET on Friday in the center of the town. The police blocked off the entire block after the shooting. The police officer who was nearby at the time of the heist tried to stop the perpetrators but they started shooting at him. He returned fire and shot and killed the two of the perpetrators but not before he was shot himself. According to Serbian police (MUP), suspects Darinko V. of Berane, Montenegro, and Velibor L. of Bijelo Polje, also in Montenegro, were killed while Adnan S. of Berane was arrested and taken to the Vlasotince police station. The police added in the release that Stamenkovic was shot in the chest and that he died on the way to the hospital. Serbian Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dacic expressed his deepest condolences to the policeman’s family. “I am upset by the tragic event and I am aware that police officers can find themselves in life threatening situations in the line of duty every day,” he stressed. Dacic added that “Miroslav’s tragic death reminds us that the work of a police officer is one of the toughest and that the very best of us do it”. “I hope that the entire society will understand the risk that police officers face every day and that it will learn to respect it,” the interior minister said in a telegram to Stamenkovic’s family. The robbery took place around 8:45 CET on Friday in the center of the town. According to Serbian police (MUP), suspects Darinko V. of Berane, Montenegro, and Velibor L. of Bijelo Polje, also in Montenegro, were killed while Adnan Š. of Berane was arrested and taken to the Vlasotince police station.
The police added in the release that Stamenković was shot in the chest and that he died on the way to the hospital.
Serbian Prime Minister and Interior Minister Ivica Dačić expressed his deepest condolences to the policeman’s family.
