Boris Tadic's ruling Democratic Party (DS) "will lead Serbia into the European Union", party officials have been quoted as saying on Saturday Tadic, who also currently serves as Serbia's president, stressed that the country "will become an EU member state despite all those who rejected rational arguments and set up unrealistic obstacles". “Democrats will lead Serbia to EU” He added that Serbia did not need help but a chance instead. DS deputy leader and Agriculture Minister Dusan Petrovic said that today was a great day and that the citizens today had a much better chance of a better life than three days ago. He noted that the DS had been slowly leading the country into the EU in the last 22 years. “This is our path and we will lead the country into the EU,” Petrovic pointed out. Defense Minister Dragan Sutanovac said that the DS had four years ago only offered a vision of the European Serbia and that it had managed to get the EU candidate status after numerous sacrifices. “They said we would not make it, some because they don’t support the EU pathway and others because they do not support it sincerely,” he underscored. The minister added that those who did not support the country’s EU pathway believed in isolation despite the fact that not a single isolated country in the world could offer a better future to its citizens. DS deputy leader and Belgrade Mayor Dragan Djilas said Saturday that the EU's decision to grant Serbia candidate status for membership obligated those ruling the country to work harder and ensure a more prosperous future for the people. "The policy of the DS, President (Boris) Tadic and those who follow us in this policy, clearly shows that we can only overcome the situation we are in today if all of us together go through the door leading us to a better life. I call on all who want Serbia to live better, and their children to live better, to follow our policy," he said opening a conference at the Belgrade fair under the slogan "European step - good for everyone." Djilas said it was the duty of DS and those following its policy to create jobs and solve the accumulated social problems such as corruption. "Starting tomorrow, all of us who are asking for the people's trust must work and must know what we are doing, every weekend and every day, so that things will get better for everyone, and everyone that is unemployed," said the DS official. According to him, EU candidate status is the first victory in recent Serbian history won without war or killing, and thanks to the policy which brought this victory, which was started by the murdered Prime Minister Zoran Djindjic and continued by Tadic, everyone will live better in the near future. The celebration is attended by Tadic, Prime Minister Mirko Cvetkovic, former Deputy Prime Minister for EU integration Bozidar Djelic, Djindjic’s widow Ruzica, ministers and top DS officials, as well as several thousand of citizens.
