Italy is one of Serbia's most important partners both at the political and at the economic level, Serbian Parliament Speaker Maja Gojkovic said Friday.

"Italy one of Serbia's most important partners"

"I wish to thank Italy for supporting our efforts to open the first chapter in accession negotiations as soon as possible," Gojkovic told a joint press conference with President of the Italian Senate Pietro Grasso after meeting with him in Belgrade.

During the meeting, they analyzed in detail the latest European Commission's progress report on Serbia, Gojkovic said, thanking Grasso for the support coming from the Italian Senate.

Gojkovic said that she and Grasso had discussed economic relations, the migrant crisis, since both countries were facing a large influx of migrants, and cooperation in the fight against organized crime and corruption, where Serbia found Italy's experience to be invaluable.

Italy supports Serbia's EU accession, Pietro Grasso said on Friday, adding that Chapters 35 and 32 are expected to be opened by the end of this year, and Chapters 23 and 24 next year, .

The Italian Senate has already expressed and passed a decree which calls for faster opening of the first negotiating chapters with Serbia, said Grasso at the joint press conference after a meeting with Maja Gojkovic.

Grasso said that he and Gojkovic talked about migrations, adding that Italy highly appreciates what Serbia is doing in this respect.
