KIEV Opposition leaders in Ukraine have asked President Viktor Yanukovych to publicly disclose what he offered to Russia in exchange for huge economic benefits. The leader of the pro-European opposition, Vitali Klitschko, addressed a crowd of protesters and said that with the agreement announced in Moscow on Tuesday, Yanukovych had betrayed Ukraine's independence. Ukrainian opposition criticizes deal with Russia "He's given up on Ukraine's national interests, abandoned its independence," said Klitschko. He then stated that according to the opposition's findings, the president, during the meeting with his Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin, "agreed to a bailout from Russia by giving Ukrainian power plants, strategic industry, heavy industry, aviation and energy producers." "We want to know what exactly is given as collateral and his reasons for what he did," said Klitschko. He added that Yanukovych said at a roundtable discussion with opposition that he was not afraid of early elections. "If this is true, let them prove it in a fair (election) fight," said Klitschko. Although details of the Yanukovych-Putin agreement reached yesterday in Moscow are not completely known, Oleg Tyanibok, leader of an opposition right-wing group, said that the president had "pawned entire (economic) sectors."
