Arab League Secretary-General Nabil Elaraby called on the Syrian opposition to unite and said the UN plan on the transfer of power "has not met expectations". In an attempt to encourage the groups to unite, Elaraby spoke before about 250 members of the Syrian opposition at a conference in Cairo - the first organized by the Arab League, reported the AP. Arab League official urges Syrian opposition to "unite" "Sacrifices of the Syrian people are bigger than us and are more valuable than any small differences between the factions," he was quoted as saying, and adding that the Syrian opposition "must seize the opportunity that it now has". Elaraby aslo stated said the new plan by the special envoy of the UN and the Arab League, Kofi Annan, on forming a transitional government in Syria to end the crisis in that country "failed to meet Arab expectations". The plan, which was agreed on at an international conference in Geneva on Saturday, left - at the insistence of Russia - open the door for the participation of Syrian President Bashar al-Assad in the transitional administration. Syrian opposition groups have openly rejected the plan adopted via the UN mediation, criticizing it as ambiguous and saying that they will not negotiate with Assad, or with representatives of his "murderous regime". As quoted by the Itar-Tass, Egyptian Ambassador in Moscow Alaa el Hadidi said on Monday that the Syrian opposition meeting in Cairo should facilitate the resolution of the conflict in that country, rather than complicate it. He also expressed hope that Egypt will be able to play a more effective role in resolving the crisis due to the fact that it has longtime and close relations with Syria. Rebel fighters and opposition activists based in Syria said this morning that they would boycott the conference of the Syrian opposition, which is being held on Monday and Tuesday in Cairo, condemning the gathering as a "conspiracy" that favors political allies of the regime in Damascus - Iran and Russia. The conference, attended by the main opposition bloc in exile, the Syrian National Council, and other smaller groups, aims to develop a shared vision of a political transition in Syria after 16 months of bloodshed, the AFP reported.
