Russia will not back a new UN resolution on Libya if it implies the continued use of force, Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov said on Tuesday, RIA Novosti reports. "If a new resolution assumes an immediate end to violence and calls on the parties involved to sit down at the negotiating table, we in Russia will definitely back it," he said. Lavrov is on an official visit to the capital of Abkhazia, a breakaway Georgian republic that Moscow recognized as independent along with another former republic, South Ossetia, after a short war with Georgia in 2008.
