The number of global cases of the new influenza A(H1N1) virus climbed to over 8,700 worldwide on Monday. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) reported 8,732 global cases including 263 in Europe. That is just two behind Spain, which has, to date, reported the highest number of confirmed cases among the 16 countries in Europe with confirmed cases. France and Germany each had 14 cases. The United States reported 4,714 cases. These included probable cases, which US authorities began to include in their figures last Thursday, the ECDC said. The group added that the US figures were not updated over the weekend. Mexico had 3,103 cases and Canada had 495, while in Panama there were 55 cases. Colombia had 11, Costa Rica had nine, Brazil eight, El Salvador four, while Cuba had three cases and Chile had two, according to the ECDC. In the Asia and Pacific region, Japan had 25 cases, although other reports on Monday raised the number to over 130. China and Malaysia also reported new cases, according to the ECDC update. The influenza has, to date, claimed 74 lives, 68 of those in Mexico, four in the United States, and one each in Canada and Costa Rica, the ECDC said. The ECDC, with headquarters in Sweden, began operations in 2005. It covers the European Union, as well as several European countries that are not EU members.
